Travel Thursday~ Mall of America, Minnesota

I never thought I would go to a shopping mall for vacation. Well, when you let your teenage daughter pick the vacation spot that’s exactly where I landed. It was in 2011 when we had our mind blowing MALL experience.

I only have a few pictures of our trip, I have no idea where all the pictures are but I did find 2 visitor guides that’s how I knew it was the year 2011.

Original Visitors Guide From 2011

My daughter, 15 years old at the time got the idea from watching television. She was a mall rat, so I decided to take her to the Mall of America for the ultimate mall rat experience. We went during her spring break, as a teenager she stated that was her best vacation ever.

Once I completed my research I thought it would be an interesting place to visit because it is more than just a shopping mall. It has a variety of dining options, entertainment, and several other attractions. The Mall of America is a family oriented place and has something for everyone to enjoy.

My Twin At MOA

It was not an ideal spring break vacation due to the weather. When you think Spring Break you think warm weather. Not Minnesota! Not in April, it was still very cold. However, we stayed there for one week and I never thought I could get tired of shopping but honestly I did.

We stayed at Best Western Plus Bloomington Hotel which was really close to the mall. I loved our hotel because we had free shuttle service to and from the mall. The accommodations was also very nice and affordable.

If you are planing a trip:

  • Plan to stay for at least 5 days so that you can see the entire mall.
  • Have a daily budget so you don’t overspend.
  • Get the map of the mall, so you can know exactly what stores you want to visit.
  • Plan for other activities, such as visiting the aquarium, theme park, or dinner.
  • Most importantly have the best walking shoes, you are in for lots of walking!

The Mall of America is the largest mall in America. It has 4 levels with over 500 retail stores, 50 restaurants, Nickelodeon Universe theme park, a cinema, an aquarium, Lego Land and you can also get married here.

Popular Attractions in 2011~I know this has changed

To give you an idea of how big this mall is. Here are some fun and interesting fun facts: Read Here

Image:MOA website
  • It will take you 86 hours to walk the entire mall.
  • There are more than 12,000 parking spaces.
  • 7 Yankee Baseball Stadiums can fit into the mall.
  • 32 Boeing 747 can fit inside the mall.
  • 258 Statue of Liberties can lie inside the mall.
  • The MOA has its own zip code.

When the mall opened in 1992 it cost $650 million dollars to build. The mall is an amazing tourist attraction, as it has over 40 million tourist visits a year generating 2 billion in revenue. (Info courtesy MOA website)

One thing I loved about this mall, everyone was very friendly and accommodating. Makes you want to go back! Whenever you would make a purchase, if you were a tourist many stores would ship your purchase for free, I’m not sure if this policy is the same or if it has changed.

I also remember extremely large seating in the mall, because you would be so exhausted from all the walking and shopping. I had a picture of me laying out but I can’t find it.

To get away from shopping we did take the light rail to downtown. On our way we saw the old Minnesota Vikings Stadium. Coming from a state where downtown was open, it was interesting to see the downtown Skyway System. The skyway system connects buildings so you don’t have to endure the cold climate walking outside . It was very interesting.

I highly suggest if you have kids, to take them to the MOA, you want regret it. It’s a lifetime experience you want forget. Always remember

It’s better to see something once than to hear about it a 1000 times.

Fun Fact: This vacation is when I became a Green Bay Packers Fan because of all of the shops with Green Bay items. There was Minnesota Viking items but more Greenbay, I don’t know why.

Thank you for reading. Comment Below if you have ever visited or would visit.
