Human corona-viruses were first identified in the mid-1960s.

The Coronavirus has 7 types that can infect people (1-4 are most common):

  1. 229E (alpha coronavirus)
  2. NL63 (alpha coronavirus)
  3. OC43 (beta coronavirus)
  4. HKU1 (beta coronavirus)
  5. MERS-CoV (the beta coronavirus that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS)
  6. SARS-CoV (the beta coronavirus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS)
  7. SARS-CoV-2 (the novel coronavirus that causes coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19)

The Coronaviruses are named for the crown-like spikes on their surface.

There are four main sub-groupings of corona-viruses:

  1. Alpha
  2. Beta
  3. Gamma
  4. Delta

What is the Corona virus we are currently experiencing in 2020?

We are experiencing SARS-CoV-2 (the novel coronavirus that causes coronavirus disease 2019, or COVID-19) Which is a novel coronavirus, a new coronavirus that has not been previously identified. The virus causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), is not the same as the coronaviruses that commonly circulate among humans and cause mild illness, like the common cold.

A diagnosis with coronavirus 229E, NL63, OC43, or HKU1 is not the same as a COVID-19 diagnosis. Patients with COVID-19 will be evaluated and cared for differently than patients with common coronavirus diagnosis.

The Symptoms:

The symptoms range from mild to severe and may appear 2-14 days after exposure. If you develop any of the symptoms, please seek medical attention.
